Panel replacement starts with the problem to solve
Adding an EV charger, renovating a house or wondering about an older panel? A photo or age alone cannot determine whether replacement is needed. Define the requirement and have the installation assessed. This guide helps you prepare for that discussion without opening the panel or attempting a diagnosis yourself.
Distinguish the panel from the service entrance
A panel enquiry may also involve the building’s incoming electrical supply. These are not automatically the same task. Describe existing and proposed equipment so the scope can be discussed: panel replacement, circuit changes or assessment of the service entrance. The aim is an appropriate solution rather than choosing one panel rating for every property.
Discuss future projects together
A kitchen renovation, heating changes and a future charger may be planned at different times. Considering them together supports a coherent assessment. Include other intended building changes and access restrictions. Unused panel spaces and the rating printed on one appliance do not establish the requirements of the complete project.
Understand how the work will be organized
Ask what is included, which checks are planned, what access is needed and how any interruption would be coordinated. For an occupied building, identify who needs to be informed. Timing and the involvement of other parties depend on the job; there is no single duration that fits every replacement.
Prepare your enquiry
- Reason for the enquiry and observations made without handling equipment
- New equipment and future projects
- Building type and access contacts
- Existing plans, reports or insurer requests
Frequently asked questions
Does an older panel always need replacement?
Age alone does not establish that. Have the condition, requirements and context assessed before deciding on the work.
Will a larger panel solve every issue?
No. The incoming supply, circuits and building requirements also matter. The appropriate scope is established through assessment.
